The Babcocks are a picture-perfect family in their rural Texas town. Babs isn't good at education, friendships, or God, but she excels at fried okra and motherhood. Everything in her life turns upside down when 12 year old Ashley is diagnosed with diabetes, then develops a rare and deadly allergy to insulin.
The doctors explore every alternative, but Ashley doesn't improve. As she watches her daughter slowly dying and her family coming apart, Babs turns to things she's pushed away all her life -- including the meddling folks at First Baptist
Church. All that stands between her daughter's life and death is her tenth grade education, a zealous group of Baptist ladies, and 1.8 million Google hits.
As Babs struggles to understand herself and strengthen her faith, she discovers an answer no one wants to hear: a solution that polarizes her family and the community.
How far will she have to go to save her daughter -- and herself?
